How Does Yoga Benefit Females During the Menstrual Cycle?
This is a subtitle for your new post
Introduction
The various stages of the menstrual cycle affect women in many ways: physically, hormonally, and mentally. Rarely throughout the cycle are females in a state of homeostasis (Mitra et al., 2025). This constant fluctuation in hormone levels and physical symptoms severely affects the lives of these females, as it can result in distraction, lower academic or workplace performance, and negative physical health (Mitra et al., 2025; Bhuvaneswari et al., 2019). The effects aren’t exactly minor.
Mitra et al. used this study to examine the physical and mental benefits of participating in a yoga program during the menstrual cycle for college-aged women. The authors suggest that engagement in regular yoga programs will have overall positive benefits on women’s psychophysiological health throughout the typical menstrual cycle. The study was conducted using 82 college-aged females from India who have a normal menstrual cycle and don’t regularly practice yoga.
Methods
Prospective participants went through an extensive screening process to ensure they met the necessary criteria. Self-report questionnaires were then used to record the various stages of the menstrual cycle, basal body temperature, and menstrual distress symptoms. The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) was also administered. Participants in the experimental group engaged in regular, guided yoga and mindfulness practice, following the same sequence of movements, for a period of three months, and their reported results were then compared to the responses of the control group. Notably, there was no biological measure of hormone or stress levels; the data relied entirely on self-report.

Results
The findings concluded that practicing yoga helped eumenorrheic females improve their concentration, mindfulness, emotions, physical fitness, and other mental processes. The researchers explained their findings in relation to numerous additional physical and mental benefits of yoga and mindfulness, including alleviating depressive symptoms (Brinkmann et al., 2020) and improved blood flow to the pelvic organs. Self-reports from participants revealed that those in the experimental group reported better overall health during the three-month study, not just when it came to symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle.
Why This Matters
These results matter because they present women with an alternative method for treating menstrual symptoms. Often, any remedies require medication or additional equipment, like heating pads. Yoga doesn’t require any extra materials, and with easy access to the internet and countless guided yoga programs available online, it’s widely accessible to women around the world at little to no cost.
Studies like this could be used as evidence for making yoga more widely available, perhaps in schools, to help girls and young women learn how to cope with the symptoms they experience throughout their cycles. Yoga is also an all-natural approach that could benefit females who can’t take medication. And its advantages extend well beyond menstrual symptoms: independent of its cycle-related benefits, yoga can improve health and quality of life for women more broadly. This study also serves as a springboard for future research on wellness during the menstrual cycle, including a long-term study on yoga’s health benefits, a similarly structured study looking at hormonal measures, and research into yoga’s benefits for females with irregular menstrual cycles or menstrual disorders.
